The portrait represents Klimt’s final works of the golden phase, and one of two depictions of Adele. The painting looted by the Nazi’s, was one out of five of Klimt’s paintings, taken from the Bloch-Bauer family. The story of Adele Bloch-Bauer and Maria Altmann formed the basis for the 2017 novel Stolen Beauty by Laurie Lico Albanese. The portrait is featured in the memoir of Gregor Collins, The Accidental Caregiver, about his relationship with Maria Altmann, published in August 2012. The book was dramatised for the stage in January 2015.

Altmann, who was born Maria Viktoria Bloch-Bauer in Vienna, came from a wealthy Jewish family that was stripped of its businesses, home and other wealth after Germany annexed Austria in 1938. The portrait was commissioned by the sitter's husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer [ de], a Jewish banker and sugar producer.
